Manila: Philippine National Police acting chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. directed police offices and units in affected areas to intensify search and rescue efforts following Typhoon Tino, also known internationally as Kalmaegi. This directive aims to ensure the speedy and secure distribution of essential relief goods to those displaced by the typhoon.
According to Philippines News Agency, Nartatez emphasized that the PNP’s response aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s directive to provide comprehensive assistance to typhoon-affected citizens. Over 9,000 police personnel and more than 300 vehicles have been deployed for evacuation, rescue, and other humanitarian operations as Typhoon Tino impacts various regions of the country.
Nartatez highlighted the significant damage observed, particularly in the Visayas, based on social media reports from netizens. He reassured citizens that the PNP is actively coordinating efforts with other government agencies to deliver necessary assistance promptly. Additionally, local police offices have been instructed to assess the storm’s impact on the police force itself.
The PNP reported that 66 personnel, including 60 uniformed officers and six non-uniformed staff, were affected by the typhoon. Furthermore, eight police stations suffered damage. Nartatez assured that national headquarters would address these concerns and extend immediate help to affected personnel and their families.
During a press briefing at Camp Crame, PNP spokesperson and information chief Brig. Gen. Randulf Tua±o stated that coordination with government agencies is ongoing to ensure a unified response. Tua±o emphasized the PNP’s commitment to protecting lives, maintaining peace, and supporting communities. He urged the public to heed advisories, evacuate when necessary, and trust police assistance.
Typhoon Tino has intensified slightly as it moves away from northern Palawan and over the West Philippine Sea. The state weather bureau, PAGASA, reported that the typhoon is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.
