Senator proposes financial literacy courses in schools

Shooting leaves 5 dead in North Carolina

At least five people were killed, including an off-duty police officer, during a shooting in the US state of North Carolina, an official said Thursday.   The shooting took place in a neighborhood in Raleigh city, which also left two others injured, according to Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin. The Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Toronto is reminding aspiring overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) that they do not have to pay placement fees if they want to work in Canada.   “We are reminding everyone that Canada is a ‘no placement fee’ country. San Juanico Bridge light switch-on set Oct. 19

The official switch-on of the San Juanico Bridge Aesthetic Lighting and Sound project is set this coming Oct. 19 after three years of installation.   Samar Gov. Sharee Ann Tan announced during the coordination meeting here Thursday night that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is expected to lead the event.   Department of Tourism Secretary Cristina Garcia-Frasco and Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) Chief Operating Officer Mark Lapid will attend the event.   TIEZA is the funding source of the PHP80 million aesthetic light and sound project carried out by Amigo Entertainment Technologies Inc., in the past three years.

CA junks Valenzuela City plea on valuation of expropriated land

The Court of Appeals (CA) has turned down the appeal filed by the city of Valenzuela questioning the valuation of property it seeks to expropriate in Barangay Ugong.   The CA denied for lack of merit the city’s motion for reconsideration and affirmed its May 2021 decision that sided with a lower court’s decision.   The CA cited previous cases in upholding the lower court’s valuation of PHP16,000 per square meter (sqm).   The city claimed that the just compensation awarded by the trial court should have been reduced, considering that the property being expropriated is a vacant and idle
