Antiqueños urged to visit cemeteries early

The local government unit (LGU) here is advising the public to visit their dead relatives in cemeteries early during the observance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.

Darcy Bungay, Municipal Economic Enterprise and Development officer, in an interview Wednesday said the clean-up of the seven cemeteries in this capital town is now underway in preparation for the traditional observance of visiting their loved ones on November 1 and 2.

“We do not know yet what will be the directive of the National Inter-Agency Task Force on coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) if the cemeteries will be open during

All Saints’ Day or All Souls’ Day observance so it would be better if the public could already visit early,” he said.

Bungay added that three of the seven cemeteries here are private cemeteries while four are managed by the LGU.

Two of the private cemeteries located in Barangay Bantayan are owned by the Diocese of San Jose de Buenavista while the other one was developed by a private individual.

Two of the four public cemeteries are in Barangay Bantayan and one each in Barangay San Pedro and Binirayan Hills in Barangay 8.

“The public cemetery or memorial cemetery in Binirayan Hills is the most recent that had been constructed by the LGU,” he said.

The memorial cemetery being constructed in the 6,000-square meter lot has 59 mausoleum lots, 97 family plots or below the ground burial plots, 1,446 niches, and a chapel.

While its construction is still ongoing, the management has allowed 30 bodies to be buried in its completed portion.
