20.7M Filipinos done with PhilID registration

More than 20 million Filipinos are now done with the Step 2 registration for the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys).

A total of 20,724,895 individuals had their biometric information captured, as of July 23, at registration centers nationwide.

Philippine Statistic Authority (PSA) Undersecretary Dennis Mapa said the rising number of registrants will help the government achieve its target to sign up 50 to 70 million Filipinos by the end of the year.

“Given this pace, we are confident that by the end of the year, this target will be met,” Mapa, also the National Statistician and Civil Registrar General, said in a statement on Wednesday.

The appointment booking for the Step 2 PhilSys registration can be done after signing for the Step 1 process online via https://register.philsys.gov.ph/.

Step 1 is currently available in 14 cities and municipalities in the National Capital Region, and in 377 cities and municipalities across 31 provinces.

“Despite the limitations brought by the pandemic, we are thankful for the unwavering support of Filipinos to PhilSys and their continued excitement to register,” Mapa stated.

The PSA has repeatedly assured safety measures are in place amid the prevailing public health crisis.

Wearing of masks and face shields, social distancing, and regular disinfection of facilities and equipment are implemented.

Registrants for Step 2 process are advised to follow their appointed schedules as only a controlled number can be accommodated.

Walk-ins in registration is strongly discouraged.

The Step 3 process is the final stage of the registration which involves the issuance of the Philippine Identification (PhilID) card that has the PhilSys Number, a unique, permanent identification number, and the PhilSys Card Number (PCN), which shall be used in transactions.

The PhilSys number is private and confidential.

The PSA is planning to expand Step 2 operations by opening more registration sites.

Signed into law by President Rodrigo Duterte in August 2018, Republic Act 11055, or the Philippine Identification System Act, aims to establish a single national ID for all Filipinos and resident aliens.

The national ID shall be a valid proof of identity that shall be a means of simplifying public and private transactions, enrolment in schools, and the opening of bank accounts.

It will also boost efficiency, especially in dealing with government services where people will only need to present the PhilID during transactions. (PNA)
