Manila: The Philippine National Police-Regional Police Office-Western Visayas (PRO-6) conducted a series of operations over the weekend, leading to the arrest of 35 individuals and the seizure of illegal fishing equipment valued at approximately PHP5.39 million. According to Philippines News Agency, the operations were part of an ongoing campaign to combat illegal fishing activities and preserve marine resources in the region.

Iloilo witnessed the most significant crackdown, with 13 operations resulting in 22 arrests and the confiscation of equipment valued at around PHP4.68 million. In Antique, seven operations led to the arrest of seven individuals and the recovery of items estimated at PHP287,940. A targeted operation in the Panay Sea, Capiz, resulted in six arrests and the seizure of fishing equipment worth approximately PHP430,000.

PRO-6 chief Brig. Gen. Randulf Tua±o emphasized the importance of these operations, stating that the campaign aims to protect legitimate fishers and preserve marine resources. He noted, "Protecting our marine resources is also protecting the families and communities that depend on them. We will remain consistent in enforcing the law and will continue working with legitimate fishers to keep our waters productive and sustainable."

In addition to the anti-illegal fishing operations, PRO-6 accounted for 733 firearms and nine explosives during its 24-hour operations from 6 a.m. Saturday to 5:59 a.m. Sunday. Of these firearms, 728 were voluntarily surrendered, two were confiscated, and three were accounted for under the Accounting and Disposition of Firearms with Expired Registration. Iloilo led with the highest number of surrendered firearms at 554, followed by Aklan with 79, Capiz with 33, Antique with 23, Guimaras with 21, and Iloilo City with 18.
