Visayas Grid Maintains Yellow Alert Status Due to Insufficient Capacity

Visayas: The yellow alert status for the Visayas grid persists on Tuesday as the operating margin remains inadequate to meet the contingency requirement due to high demand and insufficient capacity.

According to Philippines News Agency, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) issued an advisory indicating that the yellow alert status is effective from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. The grid's available capacity is approximately 2,579 megawatts (MW), while peak demand is projected to reach 2,424 MW.

The operating margin is under strain as generating units of two major coal-fired power plants, namely units 1 and 2 of Therma Visayas Inc. and unit 3 of Panay Energy Development Corporation, are on forced outage. The NGCP reports that a total of eight power plants were on forced outage in June. Additionally, since May, another eight plants share this status, one since March, three since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023, and one since 2021.

Seventeen other plants are operating on derated capacities, which contributes to the total unavailable capacity of around 953.9 MW for the grid.
