Visayas Grid Faces Yellow Alert Due to Limited Power Capacity

Visayas: The Visayas grid is under yellow alert status again on Tuesday, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., as four generating units of major coal-fired power plants remain unavailable, limiting capacity amid high demand.

According to Philippines News agency, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) issued an advisory stating that the grid's available capacity during the day is approximately 2,587 megawatts (MW), while peak demand is projected to reach 2,384MW. Yellow alert is issued when capacity is inadequate to meet the grid's contingency requirements. The ongoing issue stems from the forced outage of units 1 and 2 of Therma Visayas Inc., unit 3 of the Panay Energy Development Corporation, and unit 1 of KEPCO SPC Power Corp.

The NGCP highlighted that seven power plants in the Visayas have experienced forced outages this month alone, with eight since May, one since March, three since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023, and one since 2021. In addition to these unavailable power plants, 12 others are operating on derated capacities.

Currently, the total capacity lost in the grid due to these outages and derated operations is around 947.8MW.
