Visayas: Four generating units of major coal-fired power plants in the Visayas remain on forced outage, resulting in another yellow alert status for the grid from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday. The generating unit 1 of KEPCO-SPC Power Corporation is still unavailable, along with units 1 and 2 of Therma Visayas Inc. and unit 3 of Panay Energy Development Corporation (PEDC), according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
According to Philippines News Agency, the Department of Energy has indicated that the PEDC unit 3 is scheduled to resume operations on Wednesday. However, since it remains on forced outage, the grid's available capacity of around 2,570 megawatts (MW) is insufficient to meet the contingency requirement as peak demand is expected to reach 2,452MW.
The NGCP reported that a total of 11 power plants have been on forced outage this June alone, with eight since May 2026, one since March, three since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023, and one since 2021. Additionally, 10 power plants are operating on derated capacities, which has contributed to the total unavailable capacity reaching approximately 964.4MW.
