US Think Tank Advocates for Increased Military Support to the Philippines

Taguig city: A senior fellow from the influential US-based Heritage Foundation has emphasized that increasing military support for the Philippines aligns with Washington’s strategic interests as the United States redirects its defense focus from Europe and the Middle East to the Indo-Pacific region.

According to Philippines News Agency, Wilson Beaver, the Heritage Foundation’s Senior Policy Advisor for Defense Budgeting, highlighted Manila as a key priority for the US. He identified China as the primary strategic challenge facing the United States, underscoring the necessity for the US defense budget and military posture to reflect this reality. Speaking at the Stratbase ADR Institute in Taguig City, Beaver stated, “We can’t say China is the biggest challenge we face and spend all of our money in Europe and the Middle East. We need to be shifting money into, one, this theater but (and) two, military systems that are more relevant to this theater.”

Beaver further argued that there is a strong strategic rationale for boosting US funding to enhance Philippine defense capabilities. His colleague, Robert Peters, a Senior Research Fellow for Strategic Deterrence at the Heritage Foundation, added that the objective of refocusing attention on the region is to deter aggressive actions against sovereign nations, rather than to engage in conflict. Peters noted that upcoming changes in the US national defense strategy, expected within weeks, might include reductions in American troop deployments in Europe, potentially reallocating resources to the Western Pacific.

Peters also observed that European countries have been reinvesting in their defense, as evidenced by increased military budgets. Meanwhile, the US Department of Defense is in the process of finalizing the 2025 US National Defense Strategy, with Undersecretary for Policy Elbridge Colby leading its development. Colby, during a previous visit to the Philippines, praised the Marcos administration for strengthening Philippine-US defense relations and urged for further acceleration and expansion of these ties.

In 2024, the US allocated USD500 million to the Philippines from the USD2 billion Indo-Pacific foreign military funding announced in April of the same year, demonstrating Washington’s commitment to reinforcing its presence in the region.
