Riyadh:The US Mission in Saudi Arabia has issued a security warning to American citizens following ongoing hostilities involving Yemen's Houthi group and Saudi Arabia. The advisory highlights the potential for rapid escalation in the situation, which could pose security threats and disrupt commercial air travel.
According to Philippines News agency, the warning outlines the involvement of Iranian-supported Houthis in attacks on Saudi Arabia, including on civilian airports and critical infrastructure, resulting in civilian casualties and significant travel disruptions. The advisory urges US citizens to exercise extreme caution if they choose to use airports in the region.
The alert comes as tensions rise between the Houthi group and the Saudi-led coalition, which backs Yemen's internationally recognized government. On Monday, the Saudi-led coalition announced the interception and destruction of two drones over the Riyadh region, although the source of the launch was not identified.
Saudi Civil Defense had previously issued an all-clear for various cities and governorates, including Abha, Najran, Khamis Mushait, and Taif, without detailing the nature of the threats. Meanwhile, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree claimed that the group targeted Dammam airport in eastern Saudi Arabia with drone attacks, causing disruptions to air traffic.
Saudi Arabia has spearheaded a military coalition against the Houthis since March 2015, following the group's seizure of Yemen's capital Sanaa and other areas in 2014.
