Philippines Affirms Right to Defend West Philippine Sea Amid China Diplomacy

Manila:Malacañang announced on Wednesday that Philippine officials are free to defend the country's territorial rights and interests in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) while maintaining the significance of resolving disputes with China through diplomatic channels.

According to Philippines News Agency, Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro emphasized that diplomatic engagements with other nations are distinct from the responsibilities of Philippine leaders to safeguard the nation's interests in the contested waters. She noted the importance of diplomacy but also acknowledged the mandate of leaders to defend national rights.

The statement followed reports of a phone conversation between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro, where they reportedly agreed to manage their differences responsibly and stabilize the situation. Wang also advised the Philippines to control politicians who had allegedly 'smeared' Beijing.

This development comes amid heightened tensions between Manila and Beijing over the South China Sea, including recent diplomatic confrontations and conflicting claims over the WPS. Earlier in October, the DFA had summoned Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan in response to his statements suggesting China would easily win a conflict with the Philippines, leading some senators to call for his expulsion.

Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. expressed that the Marcos administration has adopted a stronger stance on the WPS issue, emphasizing the necessity for the country to enhance its capabilities to assert and protect its sovereignty. He urged future administrations to maintain consistent defense policies to avoid disrupting existing plans.
