Twin Maritime Laws Secure PH Territories for Future Generations.

Manila: The Philippine Maritime Zones Act and the Philippine Archipelagic Sea Lanes Act, signed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Friday, mark a pivotal moment in fortifying maritime sovereignty and securing national interests, especially in the West Philippine Sea.

According to Philippines News Agency, the National Security Council released a statement on Saturday emphasizing its commitment to ensuring the full implementation of these laws. National Security Adviser Secretary Eduardo Año highlighted the significance of these legal instruments in solidifying the nation’s territory and enhancing the ability to protect against any infringement. As an archipelagic and maritime nation, the Philippines’ seas play a crucial role in its economic prosperity and national security, he noted. The newly enacted laws empower the country to govern its maritime zones effectively, promoting lawful and peaceful maritime activities.

Año expressed gratitude to the Senate and the House of Representatives for passing thes
e landmark legislations and affirmed the government’s commitment to working closely with all relevant stakeholders for their full implementation and enforcement. He pointed out that the new laws align with the Philippines’ rights and obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The Philippine Maritime Zones Act reaffirms the country’s sovereignty over its internal waters, territorial sea, archipelagic waters, as well as its sovereign rights and jurisdiction over the exclusive economic zone and continental shelf. The law provides a clear and robust legal framework to protect and manage the Philippines’ maritime resources and entitlements, ensuring their sustainable use for the benefit of the Filipino people. By doing so, it strengthens the country’s legal standing in line with the 2016 Arbitral Ruling and international norms.

Equally important is the Philippine Archipelagic Sea Lanes Act, which enables the Philippines to regulate the passage of foreign vessels and aircraft within it
s archipelagic waters. This legislation ensures that the maritime domain remains secure and that foreign activities within its waters are effectively regulated, conducted in a manner that respects Philippine sovereignty and national security. It establishes vital safeguards to protect both maritime resources and the environment, reinforcing the responsibility to uphold the sanctity of the nation’s waters and airspace.

Australia and the United States have publicly expressed their support for the two legislations, underscoring their significance in maintaining regional stability and security.
