Washington: US President Donald Trump expects to hold a trilateral summit meeting with Russia and Ukraine as early as August 22, US-based Axios web portal reported citing its sources.
According to Philippines News Agency, during a telephone call with Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky and European leaders following his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15, Trump announced his intention to organize a trilateral summit with Putin and Zelensky as soon as the upcoming Friday, August 22.
The New York Times earlier reported, citing sources, that after meeting with Putin, Trump proposed a peace deal wherein Ukraine would cede the remaining parts of the Donbass region to Russia. In exchange, a ceasefire at current battlefronts in Ukraine and security assurances for both Kiev and Europe would be provided.
On August 15, Trump and Putin convened at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base in Alaska for talks that spanned approximately three hours. This included a private discussion in the American leader’s limousine en route to the main venue, followed by a small-group dialogue with three representatives from each side.
The Russian delegation was composed of Kremlin Aide Yury Ushakov and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, while the American delegation included Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff.
Following the discussions, Putin informed the media that the focus was primarily on resolving the Ukraine conflict. Trump characterized his summit with Putin as “very productive.”
Subsequently, Trump reached out to Zelensky, EU leaders, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. After these communications, Trump suggested that Ukraine and Russia should promptly reach a peace agreement, foregoing his previous demand for a ceasefire.
Trump and Zelensky are scheduled to meet at the White House on August 18. Trump indicated that if the talks with Zelensky prove successful, another meeting with Putin will be arranged.
