Manila: The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) will soon establish a Regional Technical-Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Innovation Center in Negros Island Region (NIR). TESDA Director General Jose Francisco Benitez announced this initiative, emphasizing its support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
According to Philippines News Agency, Benitez highlighted the quest for a suitable location for the regional training and innovation center, noting that NIR, as a new region, is actively looking for prospective sites. This announcement was made during a press conference at the 20th TESDA General Directorate Conference held at the Seda Hotel.
Benitez mentioned a proposal to establish two regional training and innovation centers in each region of the country. One of these centers is proposed to be funded by the ADB, while the other would receive funding from the Department of Budget and Management. This initiative is part of a broader project aimed at supporting innovation within the Philippine Technical and Vocational Education and Training System.
The project seeks to provide facilities and capabilities that support skills training, accommodating both local economic growth and international workforce demands. Benitez pointed out the significant transformations and reforms taking place in the national TVET ecosystem, aligning with global shifts to which the Philippines is also adapting.
He also noted the recent signing of the implementing rules and regulations for the Enterprise-Based Education and Training (EBET) Framework Act. This law aims to bridge the gap between education and industry, enhancing the skills and employability of Filipino workers.
Additionally, TESDA has partnered with the Department of Education to offer free national certification assessments for Senior High School-Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (SHS-TVL) track students. This collaboration aims to strengthen the technical professional track and integrate enterprise-based practices in basic education.
