Super Typhoon Uwan Leaves Two Injured and Displaces Over 10,000 Families in La Union

Manila: Two individuals sustained injuries, and a substantial 10,315 families, totaling 30,597 individuals, were impacted as Super Typhoon Uwan, internationally known as Fung-wong, swept across Luzon over the weekend, as reported by the local disaster response body on Tuesday.

According to Philippines News Agency, the La Union Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) disclosed data gathered as of 5 a.m., indicating the affected families span 362 barangays across Luna, Bauang, Caba, Bangar, Sto. Tomas, San Juan, Rosario, Bacnotan, Sudipen, Pugo, Bagulin, San Gabriel, Agoo, Aringay, Balaoan, Burgos, Santol towns, and San Fernando City.

Out of these affected families, the PDRRMO reported that 6,568 families, consisting of 20,129 individuals, found shelter in 360 evacuation centers, while an additional 3,122 families, comprising 9,359 individuals, were accommodated outside evacuation centers, staying with families or relatives. A total of 505 barangays in one city and 19 municipalities experienced power interruptions.

The disaster office also initially reported 904 damaged houses, with 872 partially damaged and 32 completely destroyed. A 61-year-old from Agoo town experienced electrocution but was promptly hospitalized and has since been discharged, according to the La Union Provincial Information Office. Another individual from Rosario town, who was affected by hypertension during the typhoon, was hospitalized and is now in stable condition.

The provincial government, alongside local government units, continues to extend relief assistance to the affected residents as assessments on the damage to agriculture and infrastructure are ongoing. As of 11 a.m. Tuesday, various regions in La Union, including Luna, Caba, Santol, Bauang, the City of San Fernando, San Juan, Bagulin, Bangar, San Gabriel, Burgos, Naguilian, Bacnotan, Sudipen, and Balaoan, remain under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1.
