Sulu: Government officials, security sector partners, community leaders, and residents jointly commemorated the 128th Independence Day in Luuk, Sulu, reaffirming their collective commitment to sustaining peace, unity, and development in the province.
According to Philippines News Agency, Luuk Mayor Al-Makram Arbison and Brig. Gen. Alaric Avelina Delos Santos, commander of the Army's 1102nd Infantry Brigade, led the flag-raising ceremony at Military Park in Barangay Tandu Bato. The ceremony also featured the Panunumpa sa Watawat (Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag) and messages highlighting patriotism, civic responsibility, and the importance of preserving the freedoms won through the sacrifices of the country's heroes.
'As we commemorate our nation's independence, let us honor our heroes' sacrifices by staying united in our efforts to build a peaceful, progressive, and resilient community. The freedom we enjoy today carries the responsibility to contribute to the welfare of our people and future generations,' Arbison said in his speech aired over a local radio station.
Delos Santos underscored the role of every citizen in safeguarding the gains of peace and strengthening nation-building efforts in Sulu. 'Today, Sulu stands as a testament to what can be achieved when government agencies, security forces, and communities work together toward a common purpose,' he said, urging continued efforts to sustain the gains of peace and build a brighter future for the province and the nation.
He noted that the celebration of Independence Day served not only as a tribute to the courage and patriotism of Filipino heroes but also as a reflection of Sulu's continuing transformation as a province committed to peace, security, and development.
In Basilan province, Mayor Roderick Furigay of Lamitan City said the celebration of Independence Day is more than a program and a ceremony. 'This is really about remembering why we are here. Freedom was not easy. It was fought for and sacrificed for. For this, we should never take it for granted,' Furigay said during his speech at the Lamitan City Hall. He urged Lamite±os to commit to doing better, serving more, and building a future the next generation will be proud of.
'We don't need to do something big right away. Even small actions matter, like keeping our surroundings clean, planting trees, and helping one another. These are simple things, but this is where real change begins,' he said.
In Zamboanga City, Mayor Khymer Olaso urged his constituents to embody the ideals of the nation's heroes, emphasizing love of country, courage, resilience, and the pursuit of excellence. Olaso said these values can be sustained through investing in the youth, strengthening community participation, and advancing key development initiatives for the city.
This year's Independence Day celebration is anchored in the theme 'Kalayaan, Kinabukasan, Kasaysayan,' highlighting the enduring legacy of the country's heroes and their contributions to securing independence.
