Manila: The risk of “life-threatening storm surge” is high in at least 26 areas across the country, including the National Capital Region (NCR), as Typhoon Uwan moves toward Luzon.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has forecast storm surge heights of more than three meters in Albay, Aurora, Cagayan, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Isabela, La Union, Pangasinan, Quezon, and Sorsogon. Additionally, storm surge heights between 2.1 to three meters are expected in La Union, Pangasinan, and Northern Samar.

PAGASA also predicted tidal surges with heights ranging from one to two meters in areas including Bataan, Batangas, Bulacan, Cagayan, Batanes, Cavite, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Metro Manila, Pampanga, Pangasinan, Zambales, Eastern Samar, Dinagat Islands, and Surigao Del Norte. The agency warned of potential inundation from rising sea water and high waves in low-lying coastal communities and advised residents to relocate to higher grounds for safety.

Authorities have urged the public and disaster risk reduction and management offices to take necessary precautions and to stay updated with the next storm surge information, scheduled to be issued at 2 p.m. today. In response to the impending storm, government agencies, including the Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Fire Protection, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Office of Civil Defense, and Philippine National Police, are on high alert as they prepare for Typhoon Uwan’s impact.
