Signal No. 1 Still Hoisted in Batanes; Strong Winds Affect Northern Luzon

Batanes: Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 remains in effect, and heavy rains are forecast across Batanes as Typhoon Gorio maintains its strength, according to the weather bureau’s 5 p.m. bulletin on Tuesday. Gorio continues to pack maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center, with gustiness reaching up to 150 kph. The typhoon was located 440 km east of Itbayat, Batanes, as of 4 p.m.

According to Philippines News Agency, strong to gale-force gusts are prevailing across the Babuyan Islands and the northern portion of mainland Cagayan as Typhoon Gorio enhances the southwest monsoon. A gale warning is currently in effect over the seaboard of extreme Northern Luzon, as stated by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). Extremely rough seas are expected over the seaboards of Batanes, making sea travel risky for all types of vessels.

In the Babuyan Islands, rough seas are anticipated over the northern and eastern seaboards. Mariners operating small seacraft, including motorboats, are advised against venturing out to sea due to the hazardous conditions. Although no storm surge warning has been issued, PAGASA indicated there might be an increased potential for coastal flooding because of high waves near the coast.

PAGASA also mentioned the possibility of Typhoon Gorio exiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Wednesday afternoon or evening.
