Surigao del sur: Shellfish from Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur have tested positive for paralytic shellfish toxin, commonly known as red tide, prompting the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Caraga Region (BFAR-13) to issue an advisory over the weekend.

According to Philippines News Agency, the BFAR National Fisheries Laboratory Division conducted laboratory analysis using a screening test, specifically the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay, confirming that shellfish meat samples from Lianga Bay are positive for Paralytic Shellfish Toxins.

The bureau has advised residents to refrain from harvesting, selling, or consuming all types of shellfish and Acetes sp., locally known as "alamang," from Lianga Bay to prevent potential shellfish poisoning. Fish, crabs, and squid remain safe for consumption, but BFAR emphasized that entrails must be removed and washed thoroughly before cooking.

BFAR is working closely with local government units to enhance monitoring efforts and conduct information drives aimed at protecting public health and safeguarding the shellfish industry in the affected area.
