Senators Call for Unity and Accountability Following BARMM Elections

Manila: Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian on Tuesday hailed the Bangsamoro elections as a milestone for democratic transition in the region but called for an investigation into reports of violence and alleged fraud. "The BARMM election is a historic milestone for autonomy and democratic transition," Gatchalian said in a statement. He commended Bangsamoro voters, teachers, and law enforcers who helped carry out what authorities described as a generally peaceful exercise. "I am confident that this will pave the way for lasting peace and economic development in Mindanao," he said.

According to Philippines News Agency, Gatchalian, however, stated that the reported violent incidents and alleged irregularities should not be ignored. "Despite this, I strongly condemn the violence and alleged fraud. These must be investigated and those who violated the law must be held accountable," he said. Gatchalian urged political forces in the region to move forward after the elections. "Now that the election is over, I call for unity toward a more developed and peaceful BARMM," he said.

Senator Risa Hontiveros also noted the significance of the BARMM polls within the context of the peace process and regional autonomy. "It is important because it is tied to the peace process that was long worked for, making it a jewel in our country's history of democracy and regional autonomy," Hontiveros said in a radio interview.
