Manila: More senators have called for stronger youth protection systems following the fatal shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City.
According to Philippines News Agency, Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian emphasized the importance of enhancing existing measures to guide and ensure the safety of young people. He raised concerns about the accessibility of firearms to youths and stressed that violence prevention should begin with active parental involvement at home.
Senator Loren Legarda pointed out the need to improve programs addressing youth development, mental health, and responsible firearm access. Meanwhile, Senator Camille Villar highlighted the importance of enhancing school security, counseling services, and intervention programs for at-risk youth, as well as expanding access to mental healthcare.
Senator Pia Cayetano called for a review of school safety measures, emphasizing the strengthening of guidance and counseling services to ensure that every child feels safe and protected in school. Senator Risa Hontiveros reiterated the necessity of keeping schools as safe spaces, advocating for a thorough investigation into the incident.
