Manila: The Senate and House of Representatives’ respective Secretariats have commenced the formal review of the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte following the official transmittal of the complaint to the Senate. This step marks the beginning of a critical phase in the impeachment process, which will proceed to the Senate plenary discussions likely after the legislative break.

According to Philippines News Agency, Senate Secretary Renato Bantug accepted the voluminous documents from House Secretary General Reginald Velasco, signaling the next stage in the impeachment proceedings. The complaint, endorsed by 215 House members and approved in plenary, is now subject to a meticulous examination by Senate staff to ensure all documents are accounted for.

Bantug emphasized the importance of accuracy in handling the impeachment documents, requesting additional House staff to aid in the verification process. Velasco, meanwhile, announced the appointment of 11 House members as prosecutors to present the case before the Senate.

Senator Joel Villanueva underscored the necessity of discussing the impeachment complaint during a regular Senate session, indicating that plenary action is essential before the Senate can establish an impeachment court. Senator Ronald dela Rosa noted that the complaint would likely be addressed after the May 12 midterm elections, as the Senate will be on break.
