Surigao City: The Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) has completed and handed over five quadruplex houses to 20 families from the Sama-Badjao community in Surigao City. The housing initiative aims to provide stable and sustainable living conditions for the indigenous group known for their nomadic lifestyle.

According to Philippines News Agency, the housing project is part of the Huy-anan sa Badjao Project, which is a collaborative effort involving the DHSUD, the Surigao City government, and the United Nations (UN) – Habitat. DHSUD Undersecretary Henry Yap highlighted the project’s significance, stating that the new homes offer the Sama-Badjao a place to nurture their families, preserve their culture, and pursue their aspirations. The housing initiative is located in Sitio Panubigon, within the coastal community of Barangay Lipata.

The project not only provides housing but also serves as a model for sustainable housing and inclusive development. Known as the “sea gypsies,” the Sama-Badjao tribe is one of the Philippines’ many ethnic groups, and they often face challenges related to displacement and lack of permanent housing.

UN officials who attended the event on January 17 stressed the importance of global efforts in promoting inclusive development. They highlighted the crucial role of collaboration among partner agencies in ensuring the success of the housing project, which aims to address the needs of the Sama-Badjao community.
