San juan: Veteran actress and humanitarian Rosa Rosal has passed away at the age of 97. Her family confirmed that she died on Saturday due to septic shock secondary to pneumonia and kidney failure.
According to Philippines News Agency, Rosal’s grandson, William Thio, reported that she passed away at 9:17 a.m. at Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan City. Thio stated that although she had been bedridden, she did not suffer from any major illness until she developed pneumonia on Friday. He explained that her sudden decline was due to her age and underlying conditions such as Alzheimer’s or dementia, which led to septic shock and eventual kidney failure.
Details regarding the public viewing of Rosal’s urn will be released by the family in due course. Thio reflected on his grandmother’s legacy, remembering her not only as an accomplished actress but also as a compassionate humanitarian. He emphasized her belief that helping others stems from the heart and not necessarily from holding political office. Thio is committed to continuing her legacy through a program called “Agapay: Tatak Rosa Rosal,” which will be aired weekly on D8TV.
Rosa Rosal made significant contributions to both film and humanitarian efforts. Born on October 16, 1928, in Manila, she began her film career in the 1940s. Her notable films include “Anak Dalita” (1956), “Badjao” (1957), and “Biyaya ng Lupa” (1959). In 1955, she won a FAMAS Best Actress award for “Sonny Boy.” Beyond her film career, Rosal transitioned to television, hosting public service programs that highlighted her advocacy for social causes.
Rosal was deeply involved with the Philippine National Red Cross, joining the Blood Program in 1950 and later being elected to the Red Cross Board of Governors in 1965. She was instrumental in promoting blood donation and establishing regional blood centers, as well as advocating for blood screening for HIV/AIDS. Her work on TV shows such as “Damayan” and “Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko” played a significant role in raising public awareness and support for those in need.
