Reviving Air, Sea Routes Key to BIMP-EAGA Trade, Says Official

Manila: Reviving and expanding sea and air routes has dominated discussions at the BIMP-EAGA ministerial meetings, with Philippine officials emphasizing connectivity as crucial for boosting trade.

According to Philippines News Agency, in an interview on Thursday, BIMP-EAGA Philippine Signing Minister and Mindanao Development Authority Secretary Leo Tereso Magno highlighted that restoring suspended transport links is a top priority. “Sea and air routes were planned and initiated before the pandemic, but were halted. Reviving them now is essential,” Magno stated.

He noted that the meetings have concentrated on enhancing connections between the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia. This includes plans to reopen the Davao-Manado air route, which is seen as a vital step toward strengthening regional ties.

The minister underscored how improved connectivity aligns with broader economic objectives. “These are not only engines of economic growth but also pathways toward a more connected and competitive subregion aligned with ASEAN’s integration agenda,” Magno remarked.

Magno emphasized that the conference supports President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to foster balanced, regionally inclusive growth, positioning Mindanao as a key player in subregional cooperation. “The national government’s focus on infrastructure and innovation directly supports our goals here: expanding markets, strengthening cross-border linkages, and empowering local industries,” he added.
