Manila: A resolution has been filed in the Senate honoring the late movie icon Gloria Romero, who passed away on Jan. 25, 2025, at the age of 91.
According to Philippines News Agency, in filing Senate Resolution No. 1290, Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada highlighted that Romero, known in real life as Gloria Anne Galla, played a significant role in enriching Philippine cinema and culture. Estrada emphasized that Romero’s contributions extended beyond her acting career.
“The Senate, along with the entire Filipino nation, mourns the loss of a cinematic legend whose legacy will continue to inspire for generations to come,” Estrada stated in his resolution filed on Monday. He praised Romero for her remarkable beauty, sophisticated personality, and acting prowess in both television and films. Estrada noted that Romero thrived in her illustrious career and earned respect as a woman and actress over the years.
Estrada, who is also a movie actor, mentioned that Romero was celebrated as the “First Lady of Philippine Cinema” for her on-screen partnerships with major actors of her era, including his father, former president Joseph Estrada. Romero’s impressive filmography includes over 250 films and TV shows. Her breakthrough role came in the 1954 romantic comedy film “Dalagang Ilocana,” which earned her the first FAMAS Best Actress Award at the age of 21.
As a gesture of gratitude and respect for Romero’s contribution to the arts, a copy of the Senate resolution will be presented to her family.
