Remulla Says Estrada Weighing Options Amid Legal Troubles

Manila: Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla stated that Senator Jinggoy Estrada is contemplating either surrendering or facing arrest following plunder and graft charges filed against him by the Office of the Ombudsman.

According to Philippines News Agency, Remulla disclosed during an interview at Camp Karingal that Estrada expressed concerns over his medical condition, specifically the need for knee replacement surgery. Remulla recounted their conversation, saying, "We talked yesterday, I called him. I said either surrender or arrest. He said he should think about it. His concern is his knee that needs a knee replacement."

Remulla emphasized that the decision is beyond their jurisdiction, and they are awaiting guidance from the Sandiganbayan. He personally called Estrada around 4 p.m. on Thursday and assured that standard procedures would be followed if Estrada opts to surrender. These procedures include processing, medical checks, and certifying Estrada fit for trial before he is sent to Sandiganbayan to face judicial authorities.

The charges against Estrada and former Public Works secretary Manuel Bonoan involve "illicit" payouts amounting to PHP573 million. The crime of plunder is non-bailable, and this marks the third occasion that Estrada has been ordered arrested.

In a related development, Remulla mentioned the government's consideration of offering a reward for the arrest of Senator Ronald 'Bato' Dela Rosa. Dela Rosa is wanted by the International Criminal Court for his alleged involvement in former president Rodrigo Duterte's war on drugs. Despite the offer of a reward, Remulla noted its ineffectiveness so far and urged Dela Rosa to surrender peacefully. The Philippine National Police (PNP) continues its search for Dela Rosa, maintaining professionalism in their pursuit.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. reported ongoing investigations into senators and individuals potentially aiding Dela Rosa's evasion of arrest. Investigators have reviewed events within the Senate, tracing Dela Rosa's unexpected appearance and subsequent departure, and submitted their findings to the Department of Justice.
