Remulla Reiterates Fair Probe Against Vice President Sara Duterte

Manila: Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla has reassured that the investigation involving Vice President Sara Duterte will be conducted impartially, unaffected by political pressures or lobby groups. This assertion comes amidst speculation regarding Duterte’s potential candidacy in the 2028 elections.

According to Philippines News Agency, Remulla emphasized that the investigation’s focus remains solely on determining whether a criminal act occurred, irrespective of political implications. The Department of Justice is currently reviewing findings from the National Bureau of Investigation concerning Duterte’s alleged threat against President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

Prosecutor General Richard Fadullon stated in a recent press briefing that the prosecutors are assessing evidence from the NBI report to decide if a more in-depth investigation is warranted. Remulla also clarified that the Iglesia Ni Cristo National Day of Prayer rally would not impact the investigation, emphasizing the law’s role in ensuring equality and rejecting special favors.

Furthermore, Remulla recognized the constitutional right of religious groups to voice their opinions, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to respecting such freedoms.

In a separate matter, Remulla discussed the case of former police official Royina Garma, who was arrested in California under the Magnitsky Act. Garma, known for her admissions regarding the alleged killings during the previous administration’s drug war, has secured legal representation in the US and may be seeking political asylum.

Remulla expressed skepticism about Garma’s asylum prospects, noting her presence on the US money laundering list prior to her arrival in the country. He highlighted the possibility of Garma’s extradition to the Philippines, given the US interest in confiscating laundered assets.

Under American law, up to half of the laundered assets could be seized by the US government. Remulla noted that formal communication is awaited to initiate extradition proceedings for Garma, whose assets in the US reportedly include houses and a bank account.
