Public Warned Against Fraudulent Tower and Satellite Connection Deals

Tacloban: The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) regional office here has issued a stern warning to the public against individuals or groups falsely claiming to represent the agency in matters related to satellite connections, tower construction, or similar projects within Eastern Visayas.

According to Philippines News Agency, the advisory was made public by DICT-Region 8 officer-in-charge Melvyn Carlo Barroa. The agency clarified that it is not linked or partnered with any private individuals or entities that offer or facilitate transactions involving the lease or purchase of land for tower construction, the setting up of internet or satellite facilities, or any arrangement that suggests monetary compensation or facilitation fees.

The advisory explicitly stated that ‘DICT does not authorize nor collect any payment from private individuals, landowners, or organizations for the implementation of its official programs and projects,’ highlighting that any solicitation or demand for money under the guise of DICT-related projects is unauthorized and fraudulent.

Barroa called on the public to remain cautious when dealing with supposed representatives of mobile network operators (MNOs) and independent tower companies (ITCs). This comes in response to reports of individuals posing as agents offering to buy or lease private properties for cellular tower sites.

To safeguard against fraud, the DICT advised landowners to conduct thorough checks by asking these agents to provide documentary proof of their authority to act on behalf of legitimate MNOs or ITCs. The agency recommended verifying documents such as the Securities and Exchange Commission certificate of registration, local government unit business permit, Special Power of Attorney, government-issued ID of the agent, and real estate broker license.

Members of the public are strongly urged to verify all claims or offers directly with the nearest DICT provincial office or the DICT regional office before making any commitments.
