Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday warned the public against posting or sharing unverified videos showing “destruction” due to Super Typhoon Uwan (international name Fung-wong), saying such actions could have legal consequences. “The PNP warns the public against posting or sharing unverified videos online on the supposed impact of Super Typhoon Uwan in the country,” acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said in a statement.
According to Philippines News Agency, Nartatez cautioned that some of these videos are deepfakes and could induce fear or anxiety among citizens. He emphasized that spreading misinformation or fake news on social media “can also be dealt with in accordance with the law.” Instead of disseminating fake news, Nartatez urged netizens to share verified information, such as infographics and official advisories, to help communities prepare for incoming adverse weather conditions.
“Let us refrain from spreading fake photos, videos, and disinformation just for content or any other purposes,” he advised. “Instead, let us all be responsible and do our share in helping, at least by sharing informative and helpful messages.” The PNP chief also reminded the public to verify information from official sources, especially during periods of natural calamities, to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens. “Hindi lahat ng nakikita online ay totoo kaya’t dobleng pag-iingat ang dapat nating gawin (Not everything we see online is true, so we must be extra careful),” Nartatez stated.
