Provincial Universities in the Philippines Prove Their Educational Prowess

Manila: For decades, Metro Manila has been regarded as the epicenter of educational opportunity in the Philippines, with families often believing that attending prestigious schools in the nation’s capital was a surefire path to success. However, this narrative is changing as provincial universities across the archipelago demonstrate their ability to provide quality education and produce top-notch professionals.

According to Philippines News Agency, data now shows that schools outside Metro Manila are achieving remarkable success in board examinations and national competitions. The University of Saint Anthony (USANT) in Iriga City, Camarines Sur, is one such institution that has seen a significant increase in enrollment, with a 58.6 percent surge since 2021, marking the highest in its 78-year history. USANT graduates have achieved perfect passing rates in recent board examinations, particularly in maritime and accountancy programs.

USANT President Emmanuel SD. Ortega emphasized that the university’s nonprofit status allows it to prioritize student access to education through scholarships and financial grants, benefiting at least 15 percent of its student population. He highlighted the university’s commitment to providing a well-rounded learning experience that fosters academic excellence, character building, and personal growth through various campus events and activities.

Beyond USANT, other provincial institutions are also gaining recognition for their achievements. The University of the Cordilleras (UC) in Baguio has earned Autonomous status from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and boasts multiple Centers of Excellence in fields such as Information Technology, Criminology, and Teacher Education. UC’s College of Nursing achieved a 100-percent passing rate in the June 2024 Special Licensure Examination, and the university consistently produces bar and board examination topnotchers across disciplines.

Schools such as the University of Pangasinan, Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), Eastern Samar State University (ESSU), and several others have also produced notable top performers in various board examinations. The Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) is gaining innovation recognition, with nine higher education institutions, including UC and Benguet State University (BSU), ranked among the Global Top Innovative Universities (WURI) for 2023.

Ortega noted that studying in the provinces offers unique advantages, including a lower cost of living and cultural benefits. He pointed out that these factors can be beneficial for students planning to establish a practice or expand a business in the area.

Personal stories from students like Margarett Anne Cabardo, a Business Management student at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman Extension Programs in Pampanga and Olongapo, and Adora Estacio-Bravo, a journalism graduate of the University of the Cordilleras, highlight the personal growth and opportunities that studying in the provinces can provide. Both Cabardo and Bravo emphasized the benefits of the peaceful environment and lower costs compared to Manila.

As provincial universities continue to demonstrate their educational prowess, parents and students are increasingly considering the benefits of studying outside the capital. Factors such as academic rigor, lower costs, and strong community ties contribute to the growing appeal of provincial education.

Institutions like USANT, UC, and BSU are paving the way for a new understanding that world-class education does not require a Manila address. Families and students are recognizing that the path to success can begin in the provinces, with many students achieving their dreams after graduating from these institutions. As the system continues to evolve, provincial universities are proving that they are capable of molding individuals who can thrive academically and personally.
