BOC Destroys Smuggled Agricultural Goods in Subic

Subic: The Bureau of Customs (BOC), through the Port of Subic, has destroyed five containers of smuggled agricultural products through proper dumping. In a statement on Thursday, the BOC announced the destruction of shipments containing assorted frozen meat, fish, preserved fruits, vegetables, and other perishable items. These products were condemned at a facility in Subic, Zambales, on August 15.

According to Philippines News Agency, the forfeiture of these goods was in favor of the government due to the lack of a phytosanitary certificate, violating a Department of Agriculture administrative order and a department circular in relation to Section 1113(f) of Republic Act 10863, the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA). BOC Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno emphasized the bureau’s commitment to safeguarding the health and safety of Filipino citizens, stating that smuggled agricultural products pose significant risks.

As mandated under Customs Memorandum Order 24-2021, the condemnation process ensures that agricultural goods deemed hazardous or unfit for human consumption are properly disposed of. This measure is designed to protect consumers from health risks associated with unsafe, unregulated, and illegally imported food products.

District Collector Noel Estanislao highlighted that this action serves as a strong warning to smugglers, indicating that public health and safety will remain uncompromised. He reiterated that the BOC will persistently enforce customs laws to maintain a safer marketplace and deter illegal trade that threatens the health of citizens.
