President Marcos Appoints Justice Zalameda as New Chief Justice

Manila:President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has appointed Supreme Court (SC) Associate Justice Rodil Zalameda as the next chief justice of the Philippines, as announced by the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) on Thursday.

According to Philippines News Agency, PCO Secretary Lino Cayetano revealed the appointment during a Palace press briefing, confirming that Zalameda will succeed outgoing Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo, who is set to retire on Friday.

Cayetano emphasized the significance of the chief justice selection, highlighting that it is one of the most consequential responsibilities under the Constitution. He expressed confidence that Zalameda will perform his duties with integrity, impartiality, and a strong commitment to the rule of law. The President values experienced and principled leadership to maintain public confidence in judicial institutions, Cayetano stated.

Justice Zalameda's career spans over three decades within the Philippine justice system. He started as a Branch Clerk at the Makati City Regional Trial Court after passing the Bar in 1988, transitioned briefly into private practice, and then returned to public service as a prosecutor. His notable roles included serving as the City Prosecutor of Mandaluyong and later as a Justice in the Court of Appeals before his appointment to the Supreme Court.

In 2010, the Mandaluyong City government recognized Zalameda for his distinguished public service by naming him Ulirang Mandaleño. His vast experience throughout various levels of the judiciary has equipped him with a comprehensive understanding of the system and its beneficiaries, according to Cayetano.

Cayetano extended congratulations to Zalameda on his new role, expressing well wishes for his upcoming responsibilities as the leader of a crucial democratic institution tasked with upholding the Constitution, protecting citizens' rights, and ensuring fair administration of justice.
