Iloilo city: The Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) has made a formal request for the shutdown of telecommunication signals during the two-day highlight of the 2026 Dinagyang Festival. However, the police have stated that they will respect and comply with the decision made by the local government regarding this matter.
According to Philippines News Agency, ICPO Director Col. Kim Legada explained in an interview that the local government is currently studying the proposal. He emphasized that the festival belongs to the community, and the police are part of the security sector responsible for maintaining peace and order during the event. The request for a signal shutdown comes in light of recent bomb threats in city schools and the potential risk of such incidents occurring during the festival.
Col. Legada noted that despite similar requests in the past two years, no signal shutdowns were implemented. He reassured the public that the Security Task Group Dinagyang is well-prepared to manage the festivities, regardless of the local government's decision. The task group is focused on ensuring a peaceful, orderly, and successful celebration.
A meeting was held on Wednesday to discuss comprehensive safety and security measures. The discussions included personnel deployment, security strategies for the festival's opening days on January 10-11, crowd control, traffic management, emergency response, and inter-agency coordination. The meeting included sector commanders, task unit heads, and focal persons responsible for various aspects of security and emergency management.
Col. Legada highlighted the importance of the Dinagyang Festival as a celebration of faith and culture. He assured that the plans are being refined, coordination is being strengthened, and all partners are working closely to provide a secure and orderly festival for both locals and visitors.
