Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) has ordered police commanders to strengthen security around pumping stations and other flood-control facilities following the theft of vital equipment that disrupted flood mitigation operations in Metro Manila.
According to Philippines News Agency, PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. stated that police stations have been directed to coordinate with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, Department of Public Works and Highways, local government units, and facility operators to secure critical infrastructure, particularly in flood-prone areas. Nartatez emphasized that the theft of essential components from government pumping stations is a serious issue that compromises flood-control operations, putting lives and property at risk. This directive aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.'s instruction through Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla to enhance the protection of critical infrastructure and ensure community safety in flood-affected areas.
The directive comes in response to the reported theft of approximately eight to ten meters of grounding cable from the Navotas pumping station, which led to the facility's malfunction amid severe flooding in Metro Manila. The MMDA is actively coordinating with authorities, while the Navotas police have identified the suspect and are conducting follow-up operations to arrest them.
Nartatez has instructed concerned police units to collaborate with local governments and facility operators, intensify security, and conduct immediate investigations to identify and apprehend those responsible. The theft of pumping station components not only disrupts the operation of these crucial facilities but also necessitates the use of public funds for replacing stolen equipment, potentially delaying efforts to address flooding.
Nartatez warned that individuals who steal or purchase stolen equipment will face legal consequences. The PNP is committed to pursuing the perpetrators and ensuring that appropriate charges are filed against them.
