Philippine Businesses Remain Resilient Amid Political Uncertainty

Makati City: Philippine businesses are expected to navigate through the ongoing political noise and remain resilient, as they have faced similar challenges in the past. On the sidelines of the Shareholders’ Association of the Philippines (SharePHIL) General Membership Meeting (GMM) in Makati City, SharePHIL Chairperson Ma. Aurora Geotina-Garcia expressed confidence in the business community’s ability to adapt.

According to Philippines News Agency, Garcia emphasized that this is not the first time the business sector is encountering such situations. “Historically, the business community is able to thrive and respond to these kinds of challenges,” she said. “We will carry on and live through it.” Garcia highlighted the importance of stability and certainty for investors, noting that these elements are crucial for maintaining business confidence.

Garcia further stated that investors are looking for signs of resolution to the current political situation. “The main question now is: where is this heading? How will it be resolved? For investors, stability and certainty are important,” she remarked. Businesses have previously managed to navigate through the recent pandemic, she added, indicating their resilience. “We can survive it. Again, it’s another one of those things which typically happens, right? As Covid did and, you know, all sides of political development,” Garcia said. “Whatever happens, business will continue.”

Some major players in the industry, such as the businesses led by the Consunji family, have reported little to no impact from the current political noise. Maria Cristina Gotianun, president of Semirara Mining and Power Corp., stated on the sidelines of SharePHIL’s GMM that the group expects the situation to remain business as usual. “So far, we did not feel anything,” Gotianun told reporters.
