Gold coast: The Philippines absorbed a 0-3 loss to South Korea in the 2026 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women's Asian Cup at the Cbus Super Stadium in Gold Coast, Australia on Thursday. The Taeguk Ladies secured their second straight win to take the lead in Group A, while the Filipinas suffered their second consecutive defeat.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Philippines must beat Iran in its next game to qualify as one of the two best third-ranked squads in the group stage. Coach Mark Torcaso acknowledged the strength of the South Korean team, stating, "They're a classy side. They got world-class players." He emphasized the difficulty of turning the game around against such formidable opponents.
The first goal for South Korea was scored by Jeon Yu-gyeong, who managed to break through the defense and volley over goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel's head, placing the ball into the bottom right corner of the net. This marked Jeon's first international goal in her third cap.
Korean coach Shin Sang-woo expressed his team's strategy, saying, "We made adjustments to make sure that we will score goals in the first half." The second goal came shortly after, when Park coordinated with Choo to deliver a curling finish into the top right corner, marking her maiden goal in her fourth appearance for Korea Republic.
A third goal by Jeon Yu-gyeong was ruled offside in the 20th minute, but South Korea continued to dominate. In the second half, Kim Shin-ji executed a corner kick, allowing Mun Eun-ju to score from a meter out in the 56th minute, securing her fifth international goal.
Despite the loss, Filipina Carleigh Frilles made a notable offensive effort with a left-footed volley in the 45th minute, though it was saved by goalie Kim Min-jung. The Filipinas were also without one of their key players, Jacklyn Sawicki, who missed the match due to a bruised knee injury sustained during training.
