Manila: The Philippines is fortifying its tourism connections with Saudi Arabia as part of its strategy to capture a larger share of the Middle East travel market, according to the Department of Tourism (DOT). This initiative includes enhancing air connectivity and developing joint tourism promotions, essential steps discussed earlier this month during high-level meetings with Saudia Airlines and Riyadh Air.
According to Philippines News Agency, the discussions took place during the 26th UN Tourism General Assembly in Riyadh, where DOT Undersecretary Verna Buensuceso represented Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco. The meetings aimed to improve accessibility and foster stronger tourism collaboration between the two nations. Currently, there are two direct flights connecting the Philippines and Saudi Arabia: Riyadh-Manila and Jeddah-Manila.
The Philippines is increasingly becoming a favored destination for Saudi travelers, appreciated for its warm hospitality, competitive value, English-speaking service culture, and growing Halal-friendly tourism infrastructure. Saudi nationals are granted visa-free entry to the Philippines for up to 30 days, enhancing travel accessibility. The Saudi tourism market is rapidly expanding, driven by a young and affluent demographic with significant disposable income for travel, marking it as one of the most dynamic and high-value markets in the Middle East.
In 2024, tourism receipts from Saudi Arabia reached USD37.86 million, marking a 46 percent increase from the previous year. Popular destinations for Saudi tourists outside Metro Manila include Cebu, Boracay, Pampanga, Palawan, and Cavite, known for their premium, family-friendly beach and resort experiences.
The DOT is actively implementing Muslim-friendly and Halal tourism initiatives to attract more visitors from Saudi Arabia and other Muslim-majority countries. Efforts include increasing Halal-certified dining establishments, partnering with major hotel chains to develop Muslim-friendly properties, and launching Marhaba Boracay, the country’s first Muslim-friendly cove. Additionally, AirAsia Philippines has become the first airline to offer Halal-certified meals on all routes.
