Manila: The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) is making significant strides in reconnecting the younger generations of Filipinos living abroad with their cultural roots through the power of Philippine literature. This initiative is conducted in partnership with the Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY).
According to Philippines News Agency, CFO Chairperson and Secretary Dante 'Klink' Ang II announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the PBBY. This agreement aims to create a framework for engaging young Filipinos overseas in reading activities, thereby fostering a culture of literacy. Ang expressed his aspiration to help young members of the Filipino diaspora discover the richness of Philippine literature through this strategic partnership.
Describing the initiative as a "bridge," Ang highlighted its significance in connecting Filipino literature to the youth, especially second- and third-generation migrants raised outside the Philippines. This endeavor aligns with the CFO's mission to maintain and deepen cultural ties between overseas Filipinos and their homeland.
Among the CFO's flagship programs is Sentro Rizal, established under the National Cultural Heritage Act of 2009. Sentro Rizal serves as the primary repository of Filipino art, culture, and language resources and is accessible through Philippine embassies and consulates worldwide. This makes it easier for Filipinos abroad to connect with their cultural heritage.
Additionally, the CFO conducts the Youth Leaders in the Diaspora (YouLead) platform, which immerses overseas Filipino youth in the rich tapestry of Philippine history and culture. For instance, a group of second-generation Filipino-Australians recently participated in an 11-day cultural immersion in the Philippines, exploring heritage sites like Intramuros in Manila and Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar in Bataan.
The CFO also leverages the experience of recipients of the Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas (PAFIOO) to mentor and lead cultural activities. Through collaboration with the PBBY, the CFO aims to enhance the libraries and educational materials available in these programs, providing tangible resources to support identity formation and heritage appreciation.
PBBY Chairperson Paula Reyes reiterated that the partnership reflects a mutual goal of making books accessible to all young Filipinos, irrespective of their global location.
