Manila: Senator Risa Hontiveros on Wednesday asserted that statements from foreign officials would not hinder the Senate from exercising its powers to uphold Philippine sovereignty and national interests. This declaration followed criticism from the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines regarding the Senate's recent resolution condemning the embassy's remarks against Philippine officials and institutions, which the embassy labeled as 'nothing but a political stunt.'
According to Philippines News Agency, Hontiveros emphasized that a Senate resolution serves as a legitimate and suitable tool for legislators to voice concerns over actions impacting Philippine laws, sovereignty, and national interests. She affirmed that the Senate would not be silenced or discouraged by statements from foreign entities. Hontiveros highlighted that lawmakers would persist in using lawful measures, including resolutions, to document issues as part of their constitutional responsibilities, ensuring that legislative actions remain free from external pressures.
Hontiveros pointed to developments in the West Philippine Sea as a focal point, citing coercive activities that impact Filipino fisherfolk, freedom of navigation, and the country's exclusive economic zone. While advocating for cooperation, exchanges, and peaceful dispute resolution, she emphasized that good faith must be shown through cessation of actions that harass Philippine vessels in the West Philippine Sea.
The senator urged Filipinos to remain vigilant against misleading narratives and foreign propaganda, especially on social media, warning that manipulation of information could undermine national unity. Hontiveros reiterated her call for the swift passage of a measure mandating education on the West Philippine Sea, asserting that public awareness and maritime domain knowledge are crucial defenses against foreign interference and disinformation.
In a separate statement, Senator Francis Pangilinan criticized the embassy's response, stating that it violated diplomatic norms and international law. Pangilinan argued that the Chinese Embassy's undiplomatic response to the Philippine Senate's official act, in violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, demonstrated a lack of respect for international law and warranted condemnation. He further stressed that Filipinos should not be intimidated by foreign actors, affirming that disrespect toward the country would not be tolerated.
