PH, Japan Strengthen Maritime Security Cooperation

Manila: The Philippine Navy (PN) on Thursday announced its commitment to enhance cooperation with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) in addressing maritime threats. This announcement came following a courtesy call by JMSDF chief-of-staff Vice Admiral Saito Akira on PN chief Vice Admiral Jose Ma. Ambrosio Ezpeleta at the Navy headquarters in Manila on Wednesday, as reported by the service’s spokesperson, Capt. John Percie Alcos.

According to Philippines News Agency, during their meeting, Vice Admiral Ezpeleta and Admiral Saito focused on key areas of defense cooperation. These included the modernization efforts of the PN, joint maritime security initiatives, and the strategic partnership between the PN and JMSDF. Alcos confirmed that both naval officials reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration to address both traditional and non-traditional maritime security challenges, guided by shared values and mutual interests in maintaining regional stability.

A notable aspect of the visit was the signing of a letter of intent between the PN and JMSDF. Vice Admiral Ezpeleta expressed gratitude for the deepening naval cooperation with Japan. He emphasized the importance of exploring opportunities between the navies to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific amidst growing challenges and changes in the maritime security environment.

Alcos highlighted that the visit of the JMSDF chief underscores the longstanding commitment of both nations to enhancing maritime security and regional stability.
