New york: The Philippines has entered the final stretch of preparation for its bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), with the elections set to take place on June 3. At the 8th UNSC Election Debate for Asia-Pacific Group candidates on May 20, Permanent Representative to the UN in New York Enrique Manalo highlighted the nation's longstanding contribution to the UN in areas such as peace and security, development, and human rights.
According to Philippines News Agency, Manalo emphasized that the Philippines approaches the responsibility of serving on the Security Council with experience and a focus on cooperation and practical outcomes. He asserted that if elected, Manila is poised to act as a dependable partner and peacemaker on the international stage.
Manalo underscored the importance of multilateralism that is inclusive and cooperative. He outlined Manila's priorities should it secure the seat, including upholding the UN Charter and the rule of law, enhancing peace efforts, addressing the link between climate action and security, and promoting a transparent and accountable council.
The Philippines and Kyrgyzstan are competing for the UNSC seat allocated for the Asia-Pacific Group for the term 2027-2028. The debate also featured discussions on sustainable peace in Africa and the inclusion of women-led organizations in peace processes.
