Manila: The Philippine government has extended its sympathies to Venezuela following two powerful earthquakes, both registering above magnitude 7, that struck the country on Thursday.
According to Philippines News Agency, Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro issued a statement expressing the Philippines' heartfelt condolences to the Venezuelan people and government. She emphasized the nation's understanding of the impact of natural disasters and expressed hopes for quick recovery and rebuilding in the affected areas.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is actively monitoring the situation in Venezuela, where approximately 74 Filipinos, primarily religious missionaries, reside. At this point, no Filipino nationals have been reported injured. The Philippine Embassy in Bogota is maintaining contact with Filipinos in Caracas and Barinas, advising them to remain sheltered and stay informed through local news media.
The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck Venezuela's northern coast, causing widespread panic and sending residents into the streets. Although it is not yet clear if there were any fatalities, local authorities have confirmed that some individuals sustained injuries during the tremors.
In response to the disaster, Venezuela's interim President Delcy Rodriguez declared a state of emergency to address the situation. The DFA has committed to providing ongoing updates as the situation develops.
