PH Explores Agricultural Trade Expansion with Egypt Focusing on Fertilizer and Tuna

Manila: The Philippines and Egypt are intensifying their efforts to enhance agricultural trade and investment cooperation. A meeting between the agriculture ministers of both nations is proposed for late July, aiming to advance discussions on fertilizer supply, market access, and new export opportunities.

According to Philippines News Agency, Department of Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. stated that both countries stand to gain from the planned expansion in agricultural trade. "We see significant potential to expand agricultural cooperation with Egypt, not only in securing reliable fertilizer supplies for our farmers but also in creating new market opportunities for Philippine agricultural exports," he emphasized. Laurel also highlighted the objective of building a partnership that strengthens food security, supports farmers and agribusinesses, and promotes sustainable growth for both countries.

Officials from Cairo have committed to providing a list of fertilizer manufacturers capable of supplying the Philippine market. Egypt, being one of the world's major fertilizer producers, is exploring a long-term supply arrangement with Philippine stakeholders, including Planters Products Inc. (PPI). On the other hand, the Department of Agriculture is conducting a feasibility study to assess potential procurement opportunities.

Beyond fertilizer importation, there are emerging export opportunities with Egypt showing interest in importing tuna, papaya, and pineapple from the Philippines. Laurel expressed optimism about the outcome of these negotiations, describing it as a win-win situation for Manila and Cairo. Additionally, other agricultural products such as bananas, mangoes, coconuts, durian, tobacco, pomelo, and dragon fruit are being promoted.

Philippine officials are also advocating for the approval of market entry for fresh bananas and mangoes into the Egyptian market, while negotiations on a pending Specific Commodity Understanding continue to progress.
