Caloocan: Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro, in her capacity as the special envoy of the 2026 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) chair on Myanmar, has commenced discussions with Myanmar's leading military figures.
According to Philippines News Agency, Lazaro led a Philippine delegation to Nay Pyi Taw on Tuesday, engaging in preliminary meetings with key figures such as Acting President Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Prime Minister U Nyo Saw, and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Than Swe of the State Security and Peace Commission. The DFA reported that the meetings were marked by a 'warm and constructive exchange of views' focusing on geopolitical developments and Myanmar's political situation, including the ongoing elections.
The discussions also covered the priorities of the Philippine ASEAN chairship and the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus. Lazaro reiterated the Philippines' commitment to continuing the efforts of past special envoys in advancing the Five-Point Consensus. Myanmar officials acknowledged the Philippines' role as ASEAN chair and expressed support for its chairship theme, 'Navigating Our Future, Together.'
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. appointed Lazaro as special envoy to aid in resolving the Myanmar crisis peacefully as the Philippines assumes the ASEAN chairship this year. The DFA previously stated that Lazaro aims to build on the progress of the Malaysian special envoy while promoting constructive dialogue and humanitarian aid in Myanmar.
In terms of bilateral relations, Lazaro expressed gratitude to Myanmar for its swift repatriation assistance of over 600 Filipino human trafficking victims. Myanmar officials, in turn, appreciated the deployment of an 89-member Filipino military and humanitarian team and Philippine financial aid following last year's earthquake.
During her visit, Min Aung Hlaing granted amnesty to a Filipino national convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude. However, the DFA has not yet disclosed details about the individual or the repatriation date. Additionally, both nations agreed to initiate political and economic consultations to enhance bilateral cooperation as they commemorate 70 years of diplomatic relations.
