Manila: The PCG on Wednesday cried foul over the ‘unfair’ remarks made by Cavite 4th District Rep. Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga.
According to Philippines News Agency, PCG Spokesperson, Capt. Noemie Cayabyab, stated that Barzaga’s comments were ‘unfair to the dedicated men and women of the PCG.’ She emphasized that the PCG is a professional, disciplined, and accountable government agency operating with full transparency under civilian oversight. Cayabyab affirmed that the Command welcomes public scrutiny and reassured that any credible allegations of misconduct will be investigated following due process.
The statement was a response to Barzaga’s claim that the PCG should be abolished due to its alleged role in ‘escalating tensions in the WPS with the idiotic goal of interfering with China and Taiwan’s eventual reunification.’ Barzaga further suggested that the PCG’s actions might lead to World War III.
Cayabyab acknowledged the right of elected officials to express their views on national matters and extended an offer for dialogue with Barzaga. She expressed the Command’s willingness to engage with Congressman Barzaga and other stakeholders in Congress to clarify misconceptions and strengthen cooperation toward maritime security and safety.
Additionally, Barzaga accused the PCG of corruption, citing the appointment of ‘undeserving public officials’ to high-ranking positions, particularly former House of Representatives Speaker, Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez, and Presidential Adviser on Poverty Alleviation Larry Gadon. In response, Cayabyab clarified that the PCG and the PCG Auxiliary (PCGA) are distinct entities, with the PCGA consisting of civilian volunteers who assist in community-based and humanitarian missions. She emphasized that PCGA members are not active-duty PCG officers, and their honorary ranks do not confer authority or compensation.
Cayabyab concluded by reaffirming the PCG’s commitment to fulfilling its mandates with integrity, courage, and selfless dedication to the Filipino people, ensuring the protection of lives and upholding the rule of law at sea.
