Manila: The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co. have officially launched Phase III of the Maritime Safety Capability Improvement Project (MSCIP) for the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), which involves constructing five 97-meter Multi-Role Response Vessels (MRRVs).

According to Philippines News Agency, the project was set in motion following a kick-off meeting at the Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Shimonoseki Shipyard in Japan, held from August 24 to 28. The DOTr-PCG delegation was led by DOTr Assistant Secretary for Maritime, Villamor Ventura Plan. "The construction and delivery of five 97-meter MRRVs is a significant investment in the Philippine Coast Guard's capabilities," Plan stated, emphasizing the project's role in enhancing the country's maritime safety and security.

The collaboration between the DOTr and Mitsubishi Shipbuilding includes identifying and managing potential risks early on, ensuring that technical, contractual, scheduling, and operational challenges are addressed proactively. This strategic approach aims to prevent any disruptions to the project's major milestones.

The addition of these five MRRVs will bolster the PCG's ability to perform a range of maritime operations, including search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, and environmental protection. The project signifies a notable increase in the Coast Guard fleet's capabilities and aligns with the ongoing modernization efforts aimed at maintaining a robust presence across the country's maritime domain.

This development is part of the Bagong Pilipinas initiative, which focuses on building a modern, capable, and mission-ready PCG. The initiative seeks to safeguard lives and property at sea, enforce Philippine maritime laws, and protect the country's maritime interests and sovereign rights in accordance with international law.
