PBBM Optimistic About Strengthened ASEAN-Australia Economic and Maritime Collaboration

Kuala lumpur: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. expressed optimism about enhanced cooperation between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Australia in economic, maritime, and climate initiatives, as the Philippines prepares for its 2026 chairship. Marcos spoke at the 5th ASEAN-Australia Summit, emphasizing the enduring foundation of friendship and cooperation that unites the region.

According to Philippines News Agency, President Marcos acknowledged Australia’s role as ASEAN’s first dialogue partner, which has been crucial in building a community centered on peace, stability, and prosperity for over five decades. He expressed confidence in continuing to shape a future of lasting peace and inclusive prosperity with Australia’s steadfast support.

The Philippines and its Southeast Asian counterparts are committed to implementing the ASEAN-Australia Plan of Action 2025-2029, a roadmap reflecting mutual trust and shared resolve in their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Marcos commended Australia’s proactive engagement in ASEAN-led mechanisms and its support for maritime cooperation and conflict prevention.

Marcos highlighted the importance of frameworks like the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus) and the Expanded ASEAN Maritime Forum in expanding dialogue channels and strengthening collective maritime capacity. He also mentioned Australia’s leadership in the Southeast Asia Maritime Partnerships Initiative and their co-chairship of the ASEAN Regional Forum on Non-Proliferation and Disarmament.

Furthermore, Marcos underscored the significance of the Second Protocol to Amend the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Area (AANZFTA) in enhancing market access and creating opportunities in e-commerce, sustainable trade, and MSME development. He noted the role of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the Regional Trade for Development (RT4D) initiative in fostering deeper integration and growth.

He welcomed the ASEAN-Australia Centre’s establishment, focusing on promoting Southeast Asia literacy, education, youth leadership, and cultural exchange. Marcos also expressed appreciation for Australia’s investments in climate resilience and marine protection, which support efforts on climate change and clean energy.

Finally, Marcos recognized the need for cooperation to secure the planet for future generations and encouraged Australia’s continued support for the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity, particularly in advancing biodiversity conservation and implementing the Post-2025 ASEAN Strategic Plan on Environment under Aus4ASEAN Futures.
