Lapu-Lapu City: The inauguration of a new runway at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) represents a ‘snapshot’ of the government’s dedication to infrastructure development, as highlighted by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday. He emphasized the plan to upgrade 15 additional airports across the nation.
According to Philippines News Agency, President Marcos remarked during the inauguration ceremony of the MCIA alternate runway that this development is merely a glimpse of the extensive advancements occurring within the country’s airport infrastructure. He stated that this initiative aligns with a broader vision to enhance the nation’s infrastructure development, which is founded on principles of good governance and a collective ambition to improve citizens’ lives. The President underlined that progress in connectivity directly translates to increased opportunities.
The Aviation Infrastructure Program is set to receive PHP7.7 billion this year, earmarked for the upgrade of 15 airports nationwide. The government aims to modernize airport facilities, boost connectivity, and acquire advanced navigational equipment as part of this initiative. Marcos explained that the program would enable the construction, rehabilitation, and enhancement of critical airport components such as runways, taxiways, ramps, control towers, and passenger terminals.
The President also highlighted that the new MCIA runway, which is the first and only parallel runway in the Philippines, signifies a significant advancement. It is expected to enhance Cebu province’s competitiveness and capacity to accommodate more visitors.
The alternate runway, a 2.56-kilometer infrastructure project, is designed to address the increasing air traffic demand and manage passenger and cargo volumes efficiently. This development ensures uninterrupted airport operations during emergencies, maintenance activities, and runway closures. The MCIA Authority recently reported a milestone achievement in 2024, with the airport surpassing 11.3 million passengers and experiencing notable growth in both domestic and international travelers.
President Marcos also stressed the crucial role of public-private partnerships (PPP) in executing airport projects. He noted that the flagship PPP projects are vital for the development of the country’s gateways. The signed concession agreements for the Bohol-Panglao International Airport and Laguindingan International Airport PPP projects aim to expand passenger capacity and enhance facilities. Marcos concluded by emphasizing that such endeavors are foundational to preparing the nation for future challenges and opportunities.
