Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday led the inauguration of another portion of the Pasig River Esplanade project, expressing his enthusiasm for the ongoing revitalization efforts of this historic waterway. The project is anticipated to deliver notable social and economic benefits to Metro Manila.

According to Philippines News Agency, the inauguration ceremony took place in Intramuros, where President Marcos, alongside First Lady Liza Marcos and other government officials, unveiled Phase 3 of the Pasig Rehabilitation Project, aptly titled ‘Pasig Bigyang Buhay Muli (PBBM)’. This initiative seeks to rejuvenate the Pasig River by creating an esplanade for public use.

The President shared his surprise and happiness regarding the project’s popularity, particularly among Gen Zs and Gen Alphas, who often feature the scenic river in their social media posts. He expressed optimism that the new phase of the development would foster more memorable experiences.

President Marcos highlighted the significance of the project, envisioning a fully revitalized Pasig River that would once again serve as a hub of social and economic activity in Metro Manila. He acknowledged the challenges inherent in restoring the river to its former state but emphasized the project’s importance for life, culture, and mobility.

The comprehensive project aims to transform the 25-kilometer stretch of the river into a vibrant public space, integrating cultural preservation, pedestrian access, and economic revitalization. Phase 3 specifically involved the rehabilitation and enhancement of Plaza Mexico, Maestranza, and Fort Santiago-all located within the historic Intramuros-resulting in 2,000 square meters of open public space.

President Marcos stated that the development would provide a safer and more expansive area for public events, gatherings, and leisure activities, symbolizing unity by honoring the past while embracing progress.

Reflecting on the previous phases, the President noted that Phases 1 and 2, inaugurated last year, encouraged the establishment of various shops along the Esplanade and enhanced public enjoyment of the Pasig River. Phase 1 featured a 500-meter esplanade area behind the Manila Central Post Office, while Phase 2 extended the esplanade towards Plaza Mexico in Intramuros, launched in June 2024.
